I genuinely enjoyed this right up to the blast of blatant yet totally pointless fat phobia in the epilogue. What a way to ruin an otherwise decent reading experience.The premise of prickly, rude and borderline callous doctor described as "good" is not one I usually by into. Medicine is a field that relies heavily on communication skills. Without it, people die and careers fail. For 99% of the book, Max manages to skirt the line between snobby elitist and plausible physician without crossing it. At least until the epilogue when Royce has to stop from confronting a total stranger at a party about "the health risks of being overweight, dare we even say... morbidly obese." Gasp, the horror (sarcasm). It's the author's own fatphobia shines through in those few lines that just puts me off the entire book.Royce and Max are both pushing 40, but the author may as well have been describing Ken dolls for all the authenticity and personality I got from their looks. They do have distinct personalities, their chemistry feels organic and the first-person perspective is handled well enough to be immersive, but nothing ruins a character or a book more thoroughly than a whiff of the author's own prejudices played off as a joke.This was published in 2018. I would expect this from something 10 years older, but given the quality of the writing, I really expected more maturity.
